"Dry Pin" Bearing Allowables

"Dry Pin" Bearing Allowables

(OP)
A colleague of mine mentioned that his company does not use a knock-down factor on the MMPDS-given allowable bearing stresses (Fbru and Fbry), and this concerned him. MMPDS is pretty clear that such knock-down factors should be used if all of the "dry-pin" conditions do not exist in your application (which they pretty much never do).

I'm curious though as to whether or not your companies use knock-downs on these allowables, and if so, how much? Is it an arbitrary percentage or have you gone through testing to determine statistically-derived A- and B-basis allowables?

This is really more of a poll than a question... Anyone who would like to comment is welcome. Please don't name your company in your replies.

Thanks,
SuperStress
