Use of SS above maximum operational temperature and SCC

Use of SS above maximum operational temperature and SCC

(OP)
Hi,

I am currently working with material selection for a topside platform. From our process engineers, we have received an interesting question regarding time above the maximum operational temperature and danger for (Chloride-induced)SCC.

In NORSOK M-001 it is specified that the maximum temperature limit to avoid SCC for SS 6Mo, is 120*C. However, it is often said in various material selection reports that it is OK to be above this temperature in short periods of time. The question I got from the process engineers is: how long is a short period of time, in the above case.

Any input?

RE: Use of SS above maximum operational temperature and SCC

What is the risk of failure?
If it is long enough to initiate corrosion then you may have SCC.
Hours could be serious problems.

I agree with EdStainless, anything more than minutes can be problematic.
