Structural Engineering Softwares (Autodesk Revit & Autodesk Robot Structural analysis)

Structural Engineering Softwares (Autodesk Revit & Autodesk Robot Structural analysis)

Hi Gents,

I am a Structural Engineer. Normally I design structures by means of Inventor professional, Solidworks, AutoCAD, Staad pro. Aditionally I refer to my handmade calculations as well. But know I want to get some skills in order to manage software’s like Autodesk Revit & Autodesk Robot Structural analysis. To be honest I am not so familiar with both of them, that’s why I would like to get some recommendations. Can anybody let me know what is the essential differences between them and which is more worth to start first.

Thanks in advance.
Ulvi.

Revit is unmanageable

RE: Structural Engineering Softwares (Autodesk Revit & Autodesk Robot Structural analysis)

Ulvi, you are about to open pandora's box.

Asixth is obviously extremely unhelpful and, in my opinion, wrong. Revit is not unmanageable. We use it on every project and it blows away our old workflows. But there are several threads comparing AutoCAD to Revit you can check on.

To get back to your original post, the difference between Revit and Robot is the difference between drafting and punch numbers in a calculator. Revit is a modeler...or what you use to put drawings together. Robot is an analysis program. Robot would be more similar to RAM elements, RISA 3D, etc.

Robot is not as popular as some others mentioned. From what I have heard, it's greatest attribute, being able to link directly to Revit, is no better than other similar programs. We use RAM products...RAM elements, RAM structural system, etc. I have used RISA and we are currently exploring going back to it.

It's really about preference for the type of work you do. And what you are willing to invest the time into to learn. I haven't found a program yet that you can just look at and it works the way you want it to. They all take training and time to learn.

@asixth
Any software can be considered unmanageable if you don't know how to use it properly.

@Ulvi
Revit or Robot, it depends on what you want to do.

Revit is a 3d modelling tool. If you have heard about BIM - software, it is one of those. You usually use it to produce drawings to build for example a house.

Robot is also a 3d modelling tool but with emphasis on the strength of the structure. Hence, "Structural Analysis" it analysis or rather helps you with the analysis of the structure.

So before you decide which one to start with you have to know what you want your result to be.

Many thanks Gents for valuable information. I appreciate all responses.

However I think asixth is more helpfull and optimistic )))
Guys I agree with that the tender spot here is workflow or enviroment that these softwares will be used. Actually another part of my job is draftsmanship. In this case Revit is more usable in my opinion.

Ulvi.
