Hydrogen charging

I would appreciate some input from the corrosion engineers here. If i have hydrogen gas flowing into a vessel, can it dissociate into atomic hydrogen and lead to hydrogen embrittlement, or does the hydrogen already have to be in atomic form (i.e. be the result of a corrosion reaction)? All input is welcome!

RE: Hydrogen charging

Metals, such as iron, can absorb gaseous hydrogen through chemisorption.

Thank you for the links and suggestions, they have been very helpful.

RE: Hydrogen charging

By the look of that carbon steel is ill-characterised (not really known) for hydrogen damage by hydrogen gas(that's embrittlement plus blistering). Is any metal for typical applications?
