Building a 1.5 HP brushed DC motor drive w/ dynamic braking

Building a 1.5 HP brushed DC motor drive w/ dynamic braking

(OP)
Hey all,

I'm building a prototype for a consumer product, based around a "2.75" HP PM brushed DC motor from a treadmill (these things are always massively over-rated, it's probably more like 1.5 HP). It needs to have 2 quadrant operation (driving and braking, single direction). The controller will run on 120V line power.

I want to design and build the controller myself, but I've never done PCB design before. I'm an ME, so I have knowledge of basic electrical theory, but lack the functional knowledge to actually build a system like this.

I've found plenty of resources on motor control theory, but can someone recommend a good resource (book, reference designs, etc) that will actually walk me through the practicalities of the design process? I don't want to gather the knowledge piecemeal through forums and academic papers.

Thanks in advance.

Start by researching regeneration with inverters.
