Have been having a problem auto syncing a generator in parallel to another that is already running, we have a woodward spma synchronizer that matches speed and phasing. Was wondering if anyone else has had any similiar issues with this type and what they have done to correct the problem

RE: woodward synchronizer

What is the specific problem?

The second generator will not synch in auto when called upon!

RE: woodward synchronizer

You will need to provide a lot more detail to get any kind of reasonable help.

Is this a new installation or a problem with an existing system that used to work and now doesn't?

Can you parallel one of the units to the other but not the other way around?

Do both units have the same part number SPM-A? There are about 10 different ones.

Have you checked to make sure it is in RUN mode?

Does the green ENABLE light come on?

Have you gone thru the troubleshooting guide in Woodward Manual 82384?

SPM-A synchronizers have been around a long time and in my experience a good history of reliable operation, about 95% of the problems I run into with them are that they have not been correctly installed or someone who didn't know what they were doing messed with the adjustments. Rarely I do run into one that has failed, the most common failure I find is the output relay contacts have failed.

Hope that helps,

Mike L.

This is a original instalation, I have not adjusted anything, it is intermitten it does not happen every time, when it does sync in it takes longer than usual, and the enable light does not come on at all!

RE: woodward synchronizer

So has it ever worked right? How long has this been a problem?

So it's set up for AUTO operation, right? How does the RUN input get made? Have you checked and made sure it is getting picked up?

Are the BUS and GEN reference voltages wired so they are always hot, or are they wired thru a set of relay contacts or something similar?

What kind of engine, gas or diesel? Is the online unit stable or is the bus frequency and voltage moving around a bit?

What kind of governor does the prime mover have?

Or you could post where you're at and maybe someone can recommend an experienced technician to take care of the problem.
