calculating shear stress

calculating shear stress

(OP)
Hello,

i am preparing for geotech of PE exam and have a question...

On question 33 of six minute solutions for geotechnical, why do they take the total stress and not effective stress for shear strength calculation, can anyone tell me?

for those who dont have that book, It is a question that basically gives the thickness of a clayey silty sand. they give angle of friction, dry density, moisture content, cohesion and depth also. they want us to calculate the shear stress mid point of the layer. i dint see water table shown. is that why? if they dont show water table anywhere we can assume it is not present?

and if this layer was under water table would we be using effective stress in that case?
