G40.21 44W, 1 7/8" machined nozzle

G40.21 44W, 1 7/8" machined nozzle

I have to weld a small threaded nozzle (similar to a coupling) on the shell of my 500 [psi] vessel.

Only material I have available is G40.21 44W, hot rolled 2" bar. The small nozzle will be machined out of this bar.

COMPRESS returns - in its list of materials - only the G40.21 38W. Heat treatment is not an issue since the bar in hot rolled, but the real issue here is:

can I use the 44W in place of the listed 38W?

What do I have to do to be able to use the 44W in lieu of the 38W?

Thank you for your posts

RE: G40.21 44W, 1 7/8" machined nozzle

Nothing special to do. 44W and 38W are coming dual certified (or triple certified 38/44/50W). Use the allowables for 38W in calculations and 44W in fabrication, as dual certified materials,

RE: G40.21 44W, 1 7/8" machined nozzle

38w and 44w are both listed in ASME section IV Table HF-300.1 "SA/CSA-G40.21 as specified in Section IIA grade 38W or 44W, may be used in lieu of SA-36 for plates and bars not exceeding 3/4 in.

Carbon Yield Tensil
38w 0.20% max 38 ksi min 60 ksi min 18%
44w 0.22% max 44 ksi min 65 ksi min 18%

Pressure Vessel design pressure vessels using 44w for pressure boundaries. The drawings and calculations will state 38w and material strength allowables for 38w will be used. Be careful to review mtrs before purchasing materials to ensure that the material can be recertified by the mill under 38w.

Thank you. However I specified that my bar will be a 2" machined down to a 1" 7/8 coupling. Can I still use the 44W even if it exceeds the 3/4"?
