SALT TEST

SALT TEST

SALT TEST

(OP)
As per NORSOK M 501, it has been indicated to do Salt test for the equipments before actually start to paint. My pump vendor is saying that they are not to require to do this test as their factory is in germany and far inland and there is no corrosive atmosphere in their shop. They also argue that this test is required only when have to paint near the offshore or sea.

Is this argument is correct? Can i take up this argument with the Client as they may reject this argument!

Thanks to provide the answer.

RE: SALT TEST

Not familiar with the standard, but did just glance at it. Are you referring to the Section 11 Salt test via ISO 8502-6 and ISO 8502-9 ?

RE: SALT TEST

The assembly may be at an inland Germany location, but where is the foundry? China? India? Raw castings are likely shipped by ship, and ships go on the ocean.

RE: SALT TEST

If they foul up, if there actually is salt present before they paint, what is the impact on YOUR product?

Before you decide to grant THEM a relief from this procedure that saves THEM money from doing a step YOU have accepted in YOUR contract with YOUR final client, have THEM pay for a series of tests (not just one) at THEIR site to verify that THEIR assumption - which will save THEM money! - is valid.

RE: SALT TEST

Did they accept the M-501 requirement? It's a mandatory test; there are no exceptions in the spec. Note that the NORSOK standards were developed for equipment OPERATING in a marine environment, so even if the equipment was built in the Sahara, if it's to be used for a NORSOK-related application, and the requirement is levied, it must be complied with. Residual salt could cause coating failure if the salt can combine with atmospheric moisture.

RE: SALT TEST

Actually the sahara is very salty - it's one reason you have to import sand into the desert to make concrete or else the re-bar rusts...

I'm with racoopee on this one - what benefit is it to you? Just tell them to get on with it and stop wasting everyones time...

My motto: Learn something new every day

Also: There's usually a good reason why everyone does it that way
