A106 Grade C and A234 WPC Availability

A106 Grade C and A234 WPC Availability

Hey,

I've been given the task of designing a small carbon steel pressure vessel for high pressure (6000psi). I've done my calcs, and A106 Grade B at sch XXS (after 12.5% under tolerance) can only take approximately 5850psi.

I'm going through my options, and A106 Grade C with its higher allowable stress could do the job.

Question, I'm used to using A106 Grade B, is A106 Grade C at all available? Also I'd be looking for matching pipe caps from A234 WPC, is this material at all available?

Thank you,
Marty

RE: A106 Grade C and A234 WPC Availability

marty007, you're likely just going to have to check with your suppliers. With all the combinations of sizes, schedules and materials I doubt anybody else can say for sure. I'd confirm before committing to it.

Regards,

Mike

Maybe use API pipe with higher strength?

RE: A106 Grade C and A234 WPC Availability

I had little trouble sourcing Grade C and WPC materials when I was looking for piping and vessels that were subjected to cycling stresses in a catalyst regeneration process. Otherwise, Spoonful's suggestion has considerable merit.

RE: A106 Grade C and A234 WPC Availability

Unless it is a Code vessel. API pipe is not listed.

Mike

SnTMan - yeah, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't one of those theoretically wonderful materials that only exists in a textbook and that no one actually manufactures. We're checking with suppliers.

Spoonful - yep, we're taking a look at these also. We're building to ASME B31.3, so these are listed and could easily do the job.

SNORGY - perfect, just what I was looking for. Just wanted to know it actually exists somewhere outside of a textbook.

Thanks everyone!
Marty

RE: A106 Grade C and A234 WPC Availability

marty007, I have enough trouble finding this or that schedule in this or that size these days that I am very cautious about proceeding too far before confirming availability.

Good luck.

We use A-106C and WPC fittings extensively in power plant construction and have not found it difficult to obtain.
