Link between ASME Div 1 and Div 2

Link between ASME Div 1 and Div 2

Link between ASME Div 1 and Div 2

Is there any "statement" in ASME VIII div 1, that link div 1 with div 2?.
Take as example a casting Y type strainer design by "DIV 1 - concepts" (even knowing that such component is not cover by div1"), is there any "alternative design route" in asme div 1 that link with div 2 (therefore I will be able to satisfy the design using div 2 "part 5 - design by stress analysis").

RE: Link between ASME Div 1 and Div 2

See Code Case 2695. It may also be possible to qualify the part under U-2(g).

Thanks.

I see from Case 2695, this it is just for "part 4 div 2" and apply for the RULES application in that division,
nothing from the design by stress analysis approach "part 5 in div 2".

therefore from U-2(g) you just need to satisfy the inspector that the design is properly done.
but still I cannot found the link in div 1 when to provide a "design by stress analysis approach".

RE: Link between ASME Div 1 and Div 2

Currently, there are no explicit rules on how to apply a Part 5 DBA to satisfy Div 1's U-2(g) "as safe as". The Code Committees are working on it. Here's a good set of rules to follow:

- The allowable stress for all product forms except bolting needs to be from Section II, Part D, Table 1 and Table 1A (i.e. the allowable stress comes from Division 1).
- For bolting materials the allowable stress needs to be determined from Section II, Part D, Table 3.
- Limiting values that are not calculated using the allowable stress S, such as fatigue and compressive allowable stresses, can be determined from Section VIII Division 2.
- The weld joint efficiency needs to be established in accordance with UW-11 and UW-12 of Section VIII Division 1.
- When elastic-plastic analysis is performed, the required load case combinations from ASME FFS-1/API-579 Table B1.4 Note 6 need to be used.
- The load case combinations of the applicable Division 2 assessment procedure need to be considered in addition to any other combinations defined by the User. In evaluating load cases involving the pressure term, P, the effects of the pressure being equal to zero needs to be considered (this ought to be standard practice of anyone using Part 5, but it is worth stating, again).
- Evaluation of the test condition per paragraph 4.1.6.2 of Section VIII Division 2 is not mandatory, but consideration of the test condition per UG-22(j) of Section VIII, Division 1 is mandatory.
- All other requirements for construction need to comply with Section VIII Division 1.

It is my opinion that if a designer chooses to apply U-2(g) and then uses a Design-By-Analysis, then Appendix KK ought to become Mandatory.
