Recommended Connector for Oil Film Test Rig

Recommended Connector for Oil Film Test Rig

Recommended Connector for Oil Film Test Rig

(OP)
I wish to modify an existing oil film test rig that tends to pull to one side, preventing the specimen from resting flush on the roller. Please see the attached sketch as a reference. A spring to pull the armature back is the cause of the problem. My proposed solution is to cut the armature behind the specimen and forward of the heat fins, attach a connector that would allow the tip to self-adjust freely on the roller while the rest of the armature still pulls to one side. Does anyone have a recommendation on an inexpensive but robust connector to handle this function? The armature is about 3/4" in diameter. The connector will see temperatures around 350 F.

RE: Recommended Connector for Oil Film Test Rig

There ain't no sketch.

No matter. It has been my experience that if you think you can improve on the design of something, that often/usually means that it's broken, or you are using it wrong, or that you don't understand how it's intended to work.

For that reason, I suggest that any modifications you make to the subject apparatus comprise only additional parts that you can insert or bolt on without modifying any original parts. ... and that you can remove without a trace when your improvement doesn't improve anything.
