OSHA and ASME compliant belt guard question

OSHA and ASME compliant belt guard question

OSHA and ASME compliant belt guard question

(OP)
I understand the requirements for a belt guard required for 2 sprockets and a synchronous belt per OSHA and ASME standards. The belt in question is part of skid mounted mechanical apparatus. If this skid has an enclosure (4 sides with doors and a roof) does it still require an OSHA and ASME designed belt guard? I say yes because unless you have a fail safe way to shut the machine down so there is no danger it must meet those regulations. I was told that because it has an enclosure surrounding the machine it doesn't need to meet the regulations. Anybody have experience with this type of situation?

RE: OSHA and ASME compliant belt guard question

It's not suppose to be a rocket science to realize that a person in the vicinity of a rotating shaft and coupling unprotected locally by a guard can be harmed. The workshop or a shed wall is not replacement for a close guard of that coupling...I bet the one who told you there is no need for a belt guard is the one keeping the cash.

RE: OSHA and ASME compliant belt guard question

We all agree that if the enclosure doors are opened for a person to do whatever is required with that unit, sure the unguarded rotating elements and belt are potential hazards.
