Non-compact Channel

Non-compact Channel

(OP)
Hey guys, just a quick question. In AISC 13th ed. Chapter F, I cant find capacities for Channel sections with non compact flanges or web.

Need help.

Thanks.

RE: Non-compact Channel

Read the user note under Section F2.
All current ASTM A6W, S, M, C and MC shapes except W21×48, W14×99, W14×90, W12×65, W10×12, W8×31, W8×10, W6×15, W6×9,
W6×8.5, and M4×6 have compact flanges for Fy = 50 ksi (345 MPa);
all current ASTM A6 W, S, M, HP, C and MC shapes have compact webs at Fy ≤ 65 ksi (450 MPa).

RE: Non-compact Channel

If you have an unusual situation where a custom channel or custom material results in a non-compact or slender channel, then I would think you would have one of two solutions:

1) Extrapolate the WF provisions of F3 and F4 to also apply to channels.

2) De-Rate your material until the member becomes compact. If your material Fy is really 85 ksi, but you use a value of 65 ksi in your capacity calculations, that has to be conservative, right?

Thanks for the replies guys. I just used the 9th Ed. ASD capacity instead. :)
