Capacitor discharge Stud welding

Capacitor discharge Stud welding

(OP)
I am currently trying to figure out what parameters are driving the weldability of studs on a sheet. I noticed that the thicker the sheet, the higher you have to put the voltage. Could anyone help me find a publication or an article explaining that ?
Thanx in advance.

RE: Capacitor discharge Stud welding

I am looking at your problem from a different angle...one in which studs are welded on the top flange of girders for composite action with a concrete deck.  Typically, these studs are 3/4" dia and the base metal is a minimum of 3/4" thick flange but may run as much as 1".

The reference that I can give you for this application, assuming there is a parallel to be drawn with the sheet you have and the 3/4" flange I am talking about, is O.W. Blodgett, Design of Welded Structures, The James F. Lincoln Arc Welding Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio.

I hope that helps!

RE: Capacitor discharge Stud welding

In addition to Qshake's book....Lincoln Arc Welding also puts out a book titled "The Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding" which discusses numerous means and methods of welding different materials, thicknesses, etc.

RE: Capacitor discharge Stud welding

The aws puts out a recommended practice for stud welding alos Nelson stud welding is a good reference they have bben very helpful to me in the past
