Monograph Ideas for Structural Design and Analysis course ???

Monograph Ideas for Structural Design and Analysis course ???

Monograph Ideas for Structural Design and Analysis course ???

(OP)
Hi guys, I´m starting a Specialization in Structural Design and Analysis and am currently looking for some ideas for my monograph. I was wondering if anyone out there would be able to help me with some innovative and original suggestions that I could carry out?

Thanks a lot!!!

RE: Monograph Ideas for Structural Design and Analysis course ???

Hi garethdavies84,

Well, there are a lot of subjects to be studied. Here are some general areas that can be investigated. I believe that you should first choose one general area that more interest you and, after that, choose a specific topic inside this general area.

- Structural Dynamics
- Non-linear analysis
- Geometric non-linearity
- Material non-linearity
- Contact
- Impact (every thing together)
- Buckling
- Fatigue
- vibration fatigue
- multiaxial fatigue
- fatigue in welds (seam and spot)
- Structural scaling

I believe you should also choose between a numerical or experimental approach.

I hope I have helped in some way.

Regards

I've always been curious about how to properly resolve negative moment in a steel-concrete composite system. I seem to remember that it might be addressed in at least one of the recent versions of the AISC manual but I never dug into it too deeply. So the topic may either already be solved or might be beyond the scope of an academic paper. Just a thought, though.

Thanks very much for your input guys, I´ve decided to focus on structural damping, a few ideas that I´m steering towards are for example "comparing the effects of dynamic loading in a damped and undamped structure", "strategical structural placement of damping to achieve maximum effect". Something along those lines. I want to do the investigation on reinforced concrete structures, I don´t know if you would have any advice or maybe something that would interest you that I could consider implementing in the study?

garethdavies84, I'm a mechanical engineer and I know too litle about concrete behavior. But dynamics is a subject that interests me. I think other members are more able to advice you from now on.
Good luck!

garethdavies84...I think you will need to define what range of dynamic application you want to explore. As an example, machines typically induce higher frequency but lower amplitude issues than the oscillation of either seismic or wind loads. They are handled differently and the structural response of each is different in a building or foundation.

Further, you need to know a lot about concrete and its properties, steel reinforcement and its properties and the interactive properties of the two within reinforced concrete.

I would suggest you get very familiar with Neville on Concrete, the Portland Cement Assoc in the US, the American Concrete Institute and its international counterparts, ASTM standards, British Standards and Australian Standards. Then look at the respective codes under which your structures must perform.
