Well, there are a lot of subjects to be studied. Here are some general areas that can be investigated. I believe that you should first choose one general area that more interest you and, after that, choose a specific topic inside this general area.
- Structural Dynamics
- Non-linear analysis
- Geometric non-linearity
- Material non-linearity
- Contact
- Impact (every thing together)
- Buckling
- Fatigue
- vibration fatigue
- multiaxial fatigue
- fatigue in welds (seam and spot)
- Structural scaling
I believe you should also choose between a numerical or experimental approach.
I hope I have helped in some way.
Regards

Further, you need to know a lot about concrete and its properties, steel reinforcement and its properties and the interactive properties of the two within reinforced concrete.
I would suggest you get very familiar with Neville on Concrete, the Portland Cement Assoc in the US, the American Concrete Institute and its international counterparts, ASTM standards, British Standards and Australian Standards. Then look at the respective codes under which your structures must perform.
