Tensile strength of Cotton, Nylon, Polyester fiber?

Tensile strength of Cotton, Nylon, Polyester fiber?

Tensile strength of Cotton, Nylon, Polyester fiber?

(OP)
I know this might sound like an easy question, but what's the tensile strength of Cotton, Nylon, and Polyester fibers? It's been months now and I still don't have any good data.

Also, what's the tensile strength of Technora fiber?

RE: Tensile strength of Cotton, Nylon, Polyester fiber?

Fiber ultimate strength is called "tenacity", and is usually quoted in grams/denier or g/d. Denier is a linear mass density. Wikipedia has data for typical cotton fibers, and you should be able to find the others with a bit of googling (I'm being more vague also, because there are about as many types/kinds of nylon as there are kinds of wood, and expect you will find even more variation from the generic term "polyester"). The tenacity for manufactured fibers will actually go up as the fiber denier is decreased (i.e. smaller fibers), just like with spring wire.

The same table gives polyester (PET) as 1.1 GPa and nylon (PA6 and PA6,6) as 0.9 GPa.

Huh. So nylon is 4x weaker than Kevlar and Technora. Pretty impressive.

I still can't find any data for cotton fibers.

RE: Tensile strength of Cotton, Nylon, Polyester fiber?

Wikipedia gives tensile strengths for cotton fiber. Just enter cotton in the search box. But, it will give you figures in grams/denier, so you will have to convert.

RE: Tensile strength of Cotton, Nylon, Polyester fiber?

A Google search for "strength cotton fiber MPa" gives the answers you want in the first hit.

Answer 1.1 GPa.

Really, can people at least make a real effort to use Google before asking?

I already Googled it about twenty times before using different keywords.
Sorry, but I guess you're better at Googling stuff than I am. And thanks :)

RE: Tensile strength of Cotton, Nylon, Polyester fiber?

No worries! Googling may be more of an art than I'd suspected.
