hobart welding machine problem

(OP)
i have a hobart mega arc 300G, 1984 year model, ford gas engine 2300 , 4 cyl. When I am welding with 1/8" rods , sometimes it will speed up and the heat will change like i am burning a 1/4" rod. the only way to fix this is to turn the machine off and let it cool down awhile. then when i start it again , sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. i have had the dios checked and it checked out ok as did a load test and generator test.I have had new slip ring brushes put in and seated, and a 1" x 1" rectifier box. i have also replaced the timing belt and the govenor. Can you give me any advice?
 thanks, john moore
