Rebar ties/spacing

Rebar ties/spacing

Rebar ties/spacing

(OP)
I need to get a source for tie spacing. I cannot find anything on it.

Example:
If I've got a pedestal or column that is 36" square, I need 8 total verticals around the perimeter (one at each of the four corners, + one at the midpoint of each side). I use a #4 square tie around all of them. But I need to use a diamond shape tie as well, to tie the verticals at the midpoint.

Is there some standard that says how far apart the verticals can be WITHOUT tying in a secondary direction? i.e. where I DON'T need the diamond shape tie?

RE: Rebar ties/spacing

It used to be 6" clear between bars but I can't say whether or not that is still the case.

RE: Rebar ties/spacing

The requirements are found in ACI 318 7.10.5. In a compression member, if you have longitudinal bars farther than 6 inches apart (clear), each bar needs to be held by a maximum 135 degree bend. (7.10.5.3)

RE: Rebar ties/spacing

Would look at using cross ties instead of diamond ties as well. In my experience, contractors hate the diamond ties. Cross ties are allowed by ACI 318 (even in special frames) so long as the 135 hooked ends are alternated.

Ah. I have seen that before. But I never actually read that section.

Thanks,
