spline from points, NX7.5.5

spline from points, NX7.5.5

spline from points, NX7.5.5

(OP)
sequence:
spline
through points
points from file, select file
OK to proceed
single segment
OK
Chain from All

Then I'm asked to select start point, but I can't pick my new points, even though I can see them.

Any advice?

thanks

To be more clear: I can't create a spline with the above method, and I'm looking for a method that works. I need something exact, not a fit spline. I understand there may be slope or tangency uncertainties, but I would like to start with the default geometry that NX would create from my point set.

RE: spline from points, NX7.5.5

Is it possible to show a picture of all your points ?

What is your selection filter set to?

RE: spline from points, NX7.5.5

I belive, that when you are asked for the start point, you already see your spline. Correct? If so, than there is no problem. Here is the description, of what is happening:
  • insert->curve->spline
  • select through points
  • select single segment
  • select Points From File
  • select the file and click OK
  • the curve is now created. You should see the curve now.
  • now, when you click on the OK command, you are creating new curve. And since you didn't select new file with point data, NX is asking you for a different method. And that is, selecting the points, that were created with sketch or with insert->datum/point->point.
  • just close the dialogbox now, and you will have your curve.
Try this, to be convinced about this procedure:
  • draw five points anywhere
  • insert->curve->spline
  • select through points
  • select single segment
  • do not click on Points From File. Just click on OK. You are moved to the step, that is confusing you now.
  • now, select Chain from All. You are now able to select start and end point.
I hope, that this explains and solves the problem.

Thanks for all the knowledgeable replies.

Sorry, I probably cannot show a picture.

Selection filter: I believe I checked that, but I cannot recheck it now for reasons related below.

Sven: Thanks to you for the same level of detail I offered. I am now getting a different behavior from NX. Although it would give me the points I expected yesterday from the same file, now I get an error dialog that I've exceeded the maximum degrees, and I don't see any points. My file has 112 points in it, and I see the grayed out number 111 in the degree box, but I don't think that is a needed parameter if you are inputting points by a file.

I think I'm to restart NX and see what happens.

RE: spline from points, NX7.5.5

You won't be able to get a single segment spline through 112 points. Change the option to multi-segment and pick what degree you want, which will depend on what you are doing, but degree 3 or 5 is usually sufficient.

RE: spline from points, NX7.5.5

Have you tried with multi segment instread of single? According to Help documentation for NX7.5, each segment is limited to 25 points.

Sven and Cowski,

this sequence:
insert->curve->spline
select through points
select single multiple segments, degree 3
select Points From File
select the file and click OK
specify no constraints, and/or specify automatic slope
the curve is now created. You should see the curve now. I don't see the curve.

RE: spline from points, NX7.5.5

It is possible that the spline is outside of your view clipping bounds. Regenerate the view and perform a fit after running the spline command.

That's it! I had reset my CSYS yesterday, decided not to save due to lack of progress, and then my CSYS went back to the larger assembly's location.

I just recommended this page to a colleague

Thanks!
