Boiler Feed Pump

Boiler Feed Pump

Boiler Feed Pump

(OP)
Hi!

A Chinese contractor wants to supply boiler feed pump with GB standard. We have not specified any international standard in our functional specification, only written are the flow margins and other auxiliaries such as remote monitoring of bearing temperatures and pump protection from low flows. Do we need to put in additional requirement such as API 610 in this case?

Thanks!

RE: Boiler Feed Pump

What is a GB standard?
Did you specify anything other than flow margins, monitoring, etc., how about flow / head, materials of construction, speed, configuration etc.
Does the Chinese pump meet your hydraulic and mechanical specification, assuming that you have one. You can't hide behind a specification (such as API 610 - mainly for oil /refinery applications) because you don't have or didn't supply a well written engineering / hydraulic specification.

It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts. (Sherlock Holmes - A Scandal in Bohemia.)

Unfortunately we have only what our consultant call minimum functional specifications. i guess GB standard is the Chinese standard. i am not familiar with this standard.

RE: Boiler Feed Pump

In that case you will probably get a mimimum functioning pump which should meet your minimum functional specification without deviation.

RE: Boiler Feed Pump

In fact functional specification should be more specific on the requirement than just mentioning the pump must be meeting API or what ever standard. A functional spec ( FS) can only be prepared by some one who has in depth knowledge and experience about the equipment and it application. The FS consist of the specific requirement on how the pump should be selected and built by making references to the specific clauses of API 610 or any other standard related to the type of the pump.
AS you know the API 610 covers various type of configuration and certain clause only applicable to certain type of pump.
Some requirements are at purchaser's discretion or "unless specified".

We often came across specification that just mentioned , "The pump must comply to ABC or XYZ standard." These are sub standard specification prepare by incompetent or inexperienced engineer.

RE: Boiler Feed Pump

As Pumpsonly has put it, the equipment must be complying to some standard (that you know as engineer and are confident that serves the purpose for which you are purchasing the equipment) otherwise (and be aware of that thing), manufacturer can given ANY thing.

Trust me. So you have to be very specific for your requirements else you are calling for trouble!
