detention pond discharge rate

detention pond discharge rate

(OP)
I have a rectangular-shape in plan detention pond with sloping sides (4H: 1V) that is discharging through an orifice. I have inflow volumes of water at increments of 10mins. up to two hours, an orifice size at certain elevation (for water discharge to the storm system). Do you know of a program that gives me the volume discharge so that I can get the required storage volume? It would be even better if the program considers the shape of the detention pond and give me the water surface elevation in the tank.

RE: detention pond discharge rate

AlfredDFW - HEC1 and HECHMS are free programs; whereas, PondPack, HydroCAD and others are proprietary programs that will compute storage routing. Neither take into account the shape of the basin. One can even write a spreadsheet to compute the pond routing. If you are not familiar with either HEC program, I would recommend the spreadsheet and grab your old hydrology book to look at detention basin routing.

RE: detention pond discharge rate

HydroCAD does allow for the pond shape. In this case you can use the "prismatoid" option with the specified dimensions and side slope. Use a link to enter your external hydrograh, define the orifice, and you're all set.

It would be of some benefit for you to spend some time learning the basics of storage indication method, so you'll know what the computer program is doing. I wouldn't head over to the structural forums and ask "Hey, I'm building a barn. Do you guys have a program that'll tell me how thick to make this structural member?"

RE: detention pond discharge rate

Lots of folks certainly get into trouble with H&H studies, especially engineers from other fields who think "How hard can it be?"

I have a lot of involvement with the LEED rating system. You should see when architects try to do SWM!

RE: detention pond discharge rate

Oh god, me too. I have enough trouble when the reviewers at the US Green Building Council try to do stormwater management, let alone an architect or a "LEED Consultant."

I tried to avoid the "A" word.
