Can vessel over 20Mpa (3000psi) designed to ASME Div 1?

Can vessel over 20Mpa (3000psi) designed to ASME Div 1?

Can vessel over 20Mpa (3000psi) designed to ASME Div 1?

(OP)
I have a vessel which is designed to 38Mpa (5500psi), can I use ASME VIII Div 1? Div 1 states that above 20Mpa (3000psi) there is deviation from this code but looks like as long as it meet other requirement (say if the design pass Div 2 design) then it can still be designed to Div 1?

In addition my vessel have a flat end screw into shell (the case as Fig UG-34(q) in Div 1). Div 2 don't have the case for this, so even if I design to Div 2, I still need to refer back to Div 1? Or is this geometry not allowed for high pressure case?

Thanks in advance for your help!

RE: Can vessel over 20Mpa (3000psi) designed to ASME Div 1?

I presume that you are referring to U-1(d). Unfortunately, Division 1 does not provide details about what those deviations are.

I would agree with you that applying Code Case 2695 would likely suffice for a high-pressure design.

Your head detail, from Figure UG-34(q) appears to be similar to Table 4.6.1, Detail 9, except that there would be no retaining ring and the head itself is threaded-in. I have no experience with this detail in high pressure applications, but thtreaded connections are frequently used in very high pressure (80ksi and higher) applications, so...

Thanks, TGS4. The factor for Div UG-34(q) is much higher than Div 2 Table 4.6.1 detail 9, so not sure if it is not allowed for high pressure case ...
