The difference between "alot" and "a lot" used to confuse me when I was young. After stumbling onto Hyperbole and a half, I think I've got a handle on it.

That's a great way of coping with what could annoy you. Kind of like the old public speaker's adage - imagine the audience is naked to cope with being nervous in front of a group.

While on vacation, I stayed at a cottage with a collection of issues of 'The Spectator' magazine. One of the regular columns is a typically stuffy discussion on language, and the proper use of same. I was greatly amused to see, two pages before that column, the use of "your" when "you're" was the correct word. Most every issue had typos of one sort or another, which made the whole thing much more amusing.
