What cable glands do I used with “Ex emb IIC T4” rated LED lights in hazardous area?
I think we should use ex ‘e’ glands, but my colleague who’s 30 years older insisted on using non-atex glands. Because “it’s cheaper and we are not using ex‘d’ equipment, so we don’t need integrity of the system, we just need the correct IP rating”. I agree with him on the IP part. I’m very concerned with the safety of the system if a fault does occur.
I checked the standard IEC60079-14 Edition 4.0. Under the “Additional requirements for type of protection ‘e’ – Increased safety” section, I only managed to find the requirement of maintaining the IP ratings. Nothing about using ex ‘e’ glands for ex ‘e’ enclosures.
Although in the standard IEC 60079-0, it stated “Cable glands, when installed in accordance with the instructions required by Clause 30, shall not invalidate the specific characteristics of the type of protection of the electrical equipment on which they are mounted.” – does this requirement apply to Ex ‘e’ equipment or just Ex‘d’ equipment?
What’s the real benefit of using Ex ‘gland’? Is my colleague correct all along and I’m the one who’s being too fussy for no reason?

"The connection of cables to increased safety apparatus shall be effected by means of cable
entry devices appropriate to the type of cable used. They shall maintain protection type “e”,
incorporate a suitable sealing component to achieve the required degree of protection of the
terminal enclosure (minimum IP54) and meet the mechanical impact strength requirements of
IEC 60079-0."
Yes, you do need to use a certified gland.

- because it is an illegal installation without it.
- because if it ever goes wrong you will have explain why you designed an illegal installation to a judge.
- because sex in prison makes your butt hurt. Apparently.

I'm using 60079-14:2007. 11.3 is Cage induction motors. i guess you meant 11.2 Wiring systems. in section 11.2,
"The connection of cables to increased safety equipment shall be effected by means of cable
glands appropriate to the type of cable used. They shall comply with the requirements of
IEC 60079-0."
that's it, no mention of They shall maintain protection type “e”, i wonder why this got deleted in the new version.
