Software for Concrete and Masonry

(OP)
Hello Forum,

Our company (located in Canada) has recently made the decision to push for more modelling to be done with our designs. The purchasing department (i.e. my boss) has given me the green light to research some new programs and purchase the one that would fit our needs the best.

We currently use RISA3d to do our modelling however I am not totally happy with the concrete design the program does. I also have not explored masonry design with RISA as of yet but from what I've heard the program does not handle masonry that well.

I have been introduced and done some basic design with MASS (Masonry Analysis Structural Systems) however I was not overly impressed with the user interface nor with the design results. I found that I could do the hand calculations faster than entering the information into the program and running the analysis. I was also disappointed that they would not allow openings to be modelled in the shear wall design.

For concrete design, some of the engineers have had some light experience using PCA frame (and it's other applications like slab and beam etc) however we were unsure if these programs still existed and if they designed to the current codes.

My question for the board is, what program(s) do you use for masonry and concrete designing and what are the pros and cons that you've experienced using them?

I appreciate everyone's feedback.

Jared Lloyd
