Need Help Calculating Section Modulus
Need Help Calculating Section Modulus
(OP)
I am working on two beam comparisons. The first is a "C" channel shape, 16" tall, 4" flange, 3" return, and .250 wall thickness. The second beam is fabricated from structural steel tubing 5 x 3 x .188 with the 5" leg being vertical on the top and the bottom. The distance between the upper and lower beam is 12" and a series of angular welded tubing is what holds the two together. Thank you, Paul

RE: Need Help Calculating Section Modulus
2) Calculate the moment of inertia built-up section
3) Determine the distance from the centroid to the extreme tension/compression fibers.
4) S = I / c
RE: Need Help Calculating Section Modulus
the built up beam section looks like 2 tubes (neglect the tubing joining them together)
calculating I for the two tubes is easy enough, offset some 12" apart; yes?
c = 6" (symmetric section)
Z = I/c
