Machinability of 1566 steel

Machinability of 1566 steel

(OP)
I am looking at getting some hardened shafts made from 1566 steel, but I am trying to figure out the machinability of the material. Online sources seem to show very little about the mechanical data of this steel. Does anyone know of this information or have any experience working with this material? The main machining involved is cut cutting to length and some small lathe turning.

RE: Machinability of 1566 steel

The machinability of this grade will not be very good, but it will depend on the microstructure. Are you working directly with a steel mill to obtain this grade? In what condition will it be delivered, i.e. through hardened by quench & temper, surface hardened by induction hardening, etc.?
