FUEL CONSUMPTION

FUEL CONSUMPTION

FUEL CONSUMPTION

(OP)
ANY THOUGHTS ON USING 1 1/4 SU ON 1600 BEETLE WITH A VIEW TO IMPROVING FUEL CONSUMPTION PRICE NOW HEADING TO R15/LITRE CONSECUTIVE INCREASES IN LAST 2 MTHS.

RE: FUEL CONSUMPTION

The SU may or may not be the best carburetor for the job, depending on how good you are at tuning it, and how worn out it is when you start.

As an alternative tactic, try using smaller and smaller carburetors of any design you can find, until you can no longer deal with the reduced power, then go back one step.

RE: FUEL CONSUMPTION

What carb are you running now?
Are you running a distributor with centrifugal advance and vacuum advance?

These guys say a distributor that offers effective vacuum advance is worth 4 mpg and much improved driveability. I believe it.

MIKE AND TMOOSE THANK FOR YOUR REPLIES,
AS USUAL ON THE BUTTON. THE SU CONDITION IS ONLY FAIR BUT I FEEL GOOD ENOUGH FOR A TRY.
YES HAVE THE CORRECT DIST, CARB COMBO AND THE VAC AND MECH ADVANCE ARE WORKING.
MY THINKING FOR THE SU WAS PROMPTED BY VARIOUS ARTICLES WRITTEN BY DAVID VIZARD [BETTER ATOMISATION] AND THAT IT WOULD NOT BE TOO HARD A CONVERSION. HAVING SAID THIS I WOULD LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAD A HUGE PROBLEM WITH A HESITATION, FLATSPOT THAT I CHASED ALL THE WAS TO THE MOON AND BACK AND THEN A LIGHT BULB CAME ON. THE CAR CAME TO ME WITH ONE OF THOSE PANCAKE AIRCLEANERS AND I RECALL SOMEWHERE THAT THE VW AIRFILTER WAS A BETTER BET BECAUSE OF THE HEIGHT IT AFFORDED THE AIRFLOW ABOVE THE CAB INTAKE. A PLASTIC PLUMBING COLLAR HEATED AND FITTED WITH ABOUT 3 INCHES OF PLUMBING PIPE LIFTED THE AIRCLEANER, FLAT SPOT GONE, CAR ALL CONSIDEDERED A PLEASURE TO DRIVE. REVERSE AMPLITUDE PERHAPS.
NOW FOR THE CONSUMPTION, THE CARB IS STOCK EX BRAZIL COPY OF SOLEX PIBIC32 CONDITION FAIR. I HAD HOPED THAT SOMEONE OUT THERE HAD PERHAPS TRIED THE SU AND WHAT THE RESULTS WERE.
MIKE I LIVE IN A VERY SMALL VILLAGE IN SOUTH AFRICA WERE NOTHING IS AVAILABLE EXCEPT AGGRAVATION AND SUNSHINE, IN MY SCRAP BOX I CAME ACROSS A VW KEIHEN CARB WITH A 19 MM PRIMARY CHOKE I GAVE THIS SOME THOUGHT AND POSTMARKED IT FOR A TRY FURTHER ON, IN LINE WITH YOUR THINKING. TO GIVE YOU SOME IDEA OF WHAT INFLATION AND THE DEVALUATION OF OUR CURRENCY HAS DONE THE RAND WAS ON PAR WITH THE US DOLLAR ONCE; A CARB KIT FOR SAID SOLEX IS R250 MADE IN CHINA AND ONLY ABOUT 10% OF THE CONTENTS IS USABLE THAT,S SAYING 250 DOLLARS FOR A CARB KIT!
THANKS AGAIN GOLFPIN
