ASME VIII, Div 1 Appendix 1-10

ASME VIII, Div 1 Appendix 1-10

ASME VIII, Div 1 Appendix 1-10

(OP)
I have a 60" OD x 2.25" thick vessel with an 18" 600# LWN manway access.

Per the nozzle size above, it is not classified as a "large opening" per UG-36, so I cannot apply appendix 1-7 as a supplement to UG-37.

I am really trying to avoid using an HB LWN nozzle because this will require impact testing to meet my MDMT.

My questions are as follows:

1.) Can I use ASME appendix 1-10 in lieu of UG-37 even though this is not a "large opening"?
2.) Can I use ASME appendix 1-10 in lieu of UG-37 on any size nozzle?

My understanding is that appendix 1-10 is an alternative design method, and does not really relate to UG-37. It is a stress analysis as opposed to an area replacement calculations.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated, as I am in a rush to get this one out. Thanks.

Best regards.

RE: ASME VIII, Div 1 Appendix 1-10

engpes, per my reading of the first sentence of Apx 1-10 you may use it in lieu of UG-37. See also the language about UG-41, U-2(g).

Regards,

Mike
