Minimum Flare Bevel Groove Weld Size

Minimum Flare Bevel Groove Weld Size

Minimum Flare Bevel Groove Weld Size

(OP)
Hi,

I have to weld a 6x6x3/8 HSS Tube to customer platform (W12 beam) on its flange using flare bevel groove weld. AISC ASD 9th edition Table J2.2 specifies effective throat thickness of 5/16R.

What if I do not need that much weld ? Is there a miniumum weld size I must specify, just as they have minimums for fillet weld in table J2.4 ?

Thanks

RE: Minimum Flare Bevel Groove Weld Size

The size quoted in the question is the maximum size the designer can take credit for unless the WPS is qualified by testing. The minimum weld size would be the same as for any partial joint penetration groove weld.

You can also look in AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code for the minimum PJP weld size.

Best regards - Al
