Bolt Traceability

Bolt Traceability

Bolt Traceability

(OP)
Hi All,

My company is transferring a Section VIII Div 1 design to production. It is a low pressure (50psig) and non-lethal service application. We have spec'ed out bolts that are SA-193-B7M. My question is regarding the traceability of these bolts. According to section 18 of the spec for SA-193, we have to order the bolts with MTR's. However, the material marking section (section 19) only requires that the bolts are marked with information to identify manufacturer and material grade, marking of the heat number is not required. My questions are:

1) Without any markings to tie the material to the MTR, how are we supposed to ensure traceability?
2) Section 19.3 of the SA-193 specification states that the manufacturer "is considered the organization that certifies the fastener was manufactured ... in accordance with the specification." Since there is nothing to tie the MTR to the bolts, are we limiting the scope of our inspection to ensuring that the MTR complies with chemical, mechanical and heat treatment specifications?
3) Is it required to trace specific heat numbers of bolts to final assembly or can we have a bin of accepted bolts of various heats and grab them as needed?
4) Am I overlooking something or are the requirements for traceability more lax for "off-the-shelf" components?

Please let me know if anything is not clear. Thanks for all the help!

Best,
Steris

RE: Bolt Traceability

In Section 18 of ASME SA 193 specification it clearly states that the manufacturer shall furnish a certification showing the test results for the fasteners or material and they were manufactured in accordance to this specification.

As you mentioned in Section 19 is the product marking or symbol applied to each stud. If you purchase a box or lot of studs, the tags or boxes will carry the appropriate symbol.

So, this means for fasteners or material supplied under this specification all you need to confirm for traceability is a certification from the supplier, and to ensure markings are correct when used and if you are dealing with boxes keep them segregated.
