Pile Cap Design Question

Pile Cap Design Question

Pile Cap Design Question

(OP)
I am designing a concrete pile cap which supports a bridge pier column. The piles are steel HP piles. I can reduce lateral deflections considerably by making the pile tops fixed instead of pinned. My plan is to embed them deep into the cap (say 2 ft).

My question is, is there any difference in the way I approach the design of the pile cap whether it is fixed or pinned? Let's say that strut / tie does not apply...to get flexure on the pile cap under a pinned pile top condition, I would take Axial force of pile x distance to face of column. Does this approach need to get modified if the piles have a fixed head condition?

Anything else I need to consider differently from a pile cap design perspective due to the fixed head condition?

Thanks - PKSo
