Gear shaft Heat treatment.

(OP)
I have a layshaft on a motorcycle gearbox that I wish to drill the end to a depth of 20mm and tap M8. The shaft is hard after approx 6mm I know that to anneal the end will allow me to drill and tap it. It is the re-hardening process that I'm unsure of.Regards temperature required, cooling rate quenching methods to minimise the chance of shear/wear as this will be underneath the chain drive sprocket.
Thanks for any help.
