Gambrel without cieling rafters or collar ties

Gambrel without cieling rafters or collar ties

(OP)
I am trying to design an addition that is cramped for headspace on the second floor. It needs to be a gambrel with a cathedral ceiling. I was hoping to eliminate collar ties and ceiling rafters and use a 2x8 ridge beam at each break in pitch I will be installing metal roof on 2x4 purlins.I was wondering if this is possible and will it pass?

RE: Gambrel without cieling rafters or collar ties

sounds a little precarious, but then again without a sketch I may not be seeing what you're seeing. Understanding by gambrel you mean you want three joints above the floor level, say two about shoulder level and one high ridge, you'll need these joints laterally supported, which properly designed collar ties and ceiling joists can do. By "beams", if you mean a continuous horizontal member from the front of the room to the back of the room supported by a post on each end, that, properly designed, could work too, but it would probably be considerably larger than a 2x8.

Hiring an engineer would let you know the answer to both the questions you pose. There are possibilities to guide you but too many unknowns at this point.

Doesn't sound to me that you are a structural engineer by profession. What do you do?
