Seal oil ingress into generator

Seal oil ingress into generator

Seal oil ingress into generator

(OP)
We have a huge problem in our 300 MW generator. The generator seal oil ingress in a huge amount into the generator. so almost all the rotor winding and lower part of stator submerged in seal oil. we have drain all the oil through the hydrogen drain system.
Is anybody ever heard a situation like this, what is the effect of oil on our generator and what should we do to clean this oil from the windings?

RE: Seal oil ingress into generator

Unfortunately that is not an uncommon problem. I have seen where the generator casing was flooded during stand still and where it has been well distributed with the unit in operation.

Being Mechanical, this is when I would contact a specilest. either the OEM or some one like http://www.mdaturbines.com/repairs/generator-repai...

Good luck with your recovery

RE: Seal oil ingress into generator

The form of the stator insulation will be a key factor in the repair options. First you need to stop the oil ingress, then figure out how to clean the machine in a manner acceptable to your insurers. I agree with byrdj, for such massive contamination you're going to need help from the OEM or a specialist. Make sure you keep it clean - oil in itself is probably recoverable, but oil plus dirt will almost certainly lead to problems.

I am amazed that you have lost enough oil from the L.O. system to fill the stator sufficiently to immerse the rotor - the volume involved must be many thousands of litres. Why did no one question where the oil was being lost?

thank you byrdj and ScottyUK

Actually The generator is in idle / stop condition when it happens. No one check the seal oil system until we found that our Main oil tank (for turbin lube oil) level had decreased for about 1 meter and we search all the systems and found all the hydrogen drain line of generator had been filled with oil.

RE: Seal oil ingress into generator

For a smaller machine such as motor, should send to shoo for stream clean, bake, electrical test. More optimistic that rewind not required if vpi winding.

I don't know if can be done in place with rotor pulled. At a minimum, start pulling rotor while decide the next step.

RE: Seal oil ingress into generator

Also have someone inspect windings and make a recommendation. He will evaluate condition iof winding s, likelihoid for success without rewind, maybe possibility that residual uncleaned oil results in rotor winding loosening during operation. (What speed?)
