Ligaments per UG-53

Ligaments per UG-53

Ligaments per UG-53

Does the UG-53 rules apply explicitly to holes in a pattern in the cylindrical shell, or could the rules apply also to tube-sheets? I see a lot of reference to "holes in the cylindrical shell" but it is not clear to me. Please can you give your opinion if the rules can be applied to openings in flat plates also.
Thanks

RE: Ligaments per UG-53

Yeah, they possibly could I suppose, but both TEMA and Part UHX have equations for ligament efficiency in tubesheets.

Mike

RE: Ligaments per UG-53

Formulas for cyl ligaments do not apply to flat plate. Formulas for flat plate and,or tube sheets do not apply to cyls, for flat plate use std ligament calculations, for tube sheets use the Hx ASME or Tema-if allowed.

Thanks it is clear that the underlying theory is different for flat plates and cyl shells. Just wondering if UG-53 intended for opening in cyl shells, what would an example be where you would encounter a regular and repetitive series of openings in a cyl shell to which the ligament efficiency is appropriate to use?
