Expansion Joint or pump connector

Expansion Joint or pump connector

Expansion Joint or pump connector

(OP)
I am a young engineer who's recently been assigned with the design of an underground mine dewatering pumping station. The pumping station consists of three horizontal multistage centrifugal pumps operating at Q=650m³/h & H=30 bar. The surge analyst calculated the maximum static pressure at the discharge of the pump to be around 43 bar. 12" seamless steel pipes will be used both at suction & discharge of the pump. Due to my lack of experience i want to ask whether a pump connector or an expansion joint is needed, at either the suction or discharge side of the pump. Is there any good bibliography on the subject

RE: Expansion Joint or pump connector

I would suggest a search of this forum and the pump forum as this has been discussed many times.

It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts. (Sherlock Holmes - A Scandal in Bohemia.)

Dear Artisi,

First of all thank you for your reply. I have read a lot of threads and my conclusion is that an expansion joint is not needed if the piping system is properly designed (change route of line to increase flexibility, properly supported etc.). So, i believe that firstly the proposed piping system must be modelled using a stess analysis software and then decide whether an expansion joint is needed.
