Connecting a 1200x300 Tee to the DN 1200 existing Steel Pipeline

Connecting a 1200x300 Tee to the DN 1200 existing Steel Pipeline

Hi,

What is the acceptable mtd to connect a DN 1200x300 size tee to an existing DN 1200 Mild steel water transmission pipeline.
Is it possible to weld the new tee to the existing pipeline?.

RE: Connecting a 1200x300 Tee to the DN 1200 existing Steel Pipeline

Yes, it's called a hot tap. Search on this site or google for details. If your existing pipe is very thin then it may be difficult to weld and you may need to clamp it on instead. TD Williams do them all the time.

A hot tap is only required if you cannot shut the line down.

Do you ready need a 1200*300 tee? Can a welded on branch do the job?

If must have a full tee then cutting the line is required. But a line this size can spring open (or closed) when it is cut and it takes a huge force to pull the line back into place, not to mention the hazard when cutting the line.

We often have to had tees to large lines. We weld a strucute or beam either side of the cut. Weld in the tee then remove the beam

True, I had assumed that welding in a tee for a line that was shut down was not a big isue, but you are quite correct - I've seen installed pipes jump several cms when cut so perhaps the best solution is a weldolet or other set on branch and then cut the hole. All depends for me on the wall thickness of the pipe and condition of the line.

If this is a water pipeline you can use a tap saddle and a tapping machine and do a hot tap. If the line is tape wrapped, you would need to remove the wrap where the tap saddle goes to ensure that you have a good seal.
