Modelling screw behavior in timber joints

Hi all,
I modelled a steel to timber joint with screw in Abaqus. I used beam element to model the screws and I used constraint -> "embedded region" to link the screw to the timber beam. Now I'd like to model the correct behavior of the screws including withdrawal stifness, so not using the embedded constraint. Any suggestions on how to do it?
I thought of using connector element to model the stiffness. Unfortunately as I want to have distributed stiffness along the screw and there are a lot of screws in the model it's very hard to model so much wire/connector element from the nodes of the screw (beam element) to those of the timber element.
So my questions are:
1) Is there a simple metod to simulate distributed stiffness to "pull-out" of the screw?
2) How can I connect the end of every screw to a steel plate in order to obtain a Ball-and-Socket constraint (hinge around three axes) that resists only to traction and not to compression?
