Question on Alternative Representations

Question on Alternative Representations

Question on Alternative Representations

(OP)
USING NX 7.5
Hello all,

So to get you up to speed, I've been putting together an assembly in NX that consists of a few components all with their own separate model and I was just asked to create a somewhat simplified model of a few of the components to prototype on a 3D printer. So what I'd like to do is open the components of interest, save an alternative representation and change what I need to change while leaving the "production" assembly untouched. No big deal.

The problem that I'm having is that when I do Save As -> Alternative Representation, NX replaces the primary representation in the assembly with the new file. This obviously isn't ideal, because I'm not trying to change the assembly in any way, rather I just want to create a new file that will actually end up being unused on the assembly.

Is there some sort of trick to getting this to happen without having to go back through the assembly and replace each one of the components to revert BACK to all the primary representations?

And since someone inevitably replies asking what version of NX I'm using regardless of the fact that I already mentioned it, I'm using 7.5, just like what the first line of the post says. Please forgive my cynicism.

Easy, just DO NOT SAVE THE ASSEMBLY!

After performing all of your 'Save-As -> Alternative Representation' steps, simply go to...

File -> Close -> All Parts

...and then reopen your assembly and it will be just like it was prior to start of this process. Note that all of the 'Alternative Representation' parts will have been saved long before you closed the Assembly so nothing will have been lost. Now you simply open each of these files as needed to make your changes to simplify them.
