EN 287-1:2004 to 2011 grandfathered WPQs

EN 287-1:2004 to 2011 grandfathered WPQs

(OP)
My NOBO BV is telling me that due to the new 2011 EN287 that I need to qualify fillet welds, which in the new standard it calls for. But in the front of the new standard it says "At the end of its period of validity, the existing and valid qualification testing of welders in accordance with requirement of the previous edition of this standard may be revalidated according to the previous edition."

Since my previous WPQs qualified the fillet from the Butt Weld test they should be grandfathered in correct? I shouldn't have to qualify fillet welds.

RE: EN 287-1:2004 to 2011 grandfathered WPQs

Difficult to tell. Call a few other NoBo and ask around what they say. Dont bet on 1 horse.

What also may make a difference is whether a specific edition of EN 287 is called out in your code of construction, e.g. if youre working to EN 13445 and if it requires you to use EN 287-1:2011.

RE: EN 287-1:2004 to 2011 grandfathered WPQs

I found out that the prolongation can be grandfathered for the WPQ's as long as you do not let them expire. The problem now is that my NOBO let us qualify fillet welds on Butt Weld WPQs like section IV, come to find out fillet welds require a separate test during qualification unlike Section IV. So now I have to qualify my welders for fillets.

RE: EN 287-1:2004 to 2011 grandfathered WPQs

At the end of its period of validity, the existing and valid qualification testing of welders in accordance with the
requirement of the previous edition of this standard may be revalidated according to the previous edition.
Alternatively, the range of qualification may be updated in accordance with this edition. All new qualifications
and re-qualifications shall be in accordance with this edition
