ASTM A484 - Certification Requirements

ASTM A484 - Certification Requirements

ASTM A484 - Certification Requirements

(OP)
Hi all,

In the ASTM A484, the item 9.1 and 9.2 define the lot size:

9.1 A lot for product analysis shall consist of all bars,
shapes, and forgings made from the same heat.

9.2 For other tests required by the product specification,
a lot shall consist of all bar products of the same size, or
forgings weighing less than 1000 lb [500 kg] each, from
the same heat, and produced under the same processing
conditions.

What is the included for "product analysis" in 9.1 (Mechanical an Chemical tests?) and "other tests required" in 9.2 ?

Which are the other tests required?

Regards,
Eng. Brk

RE: ASTM A484 - Certification Requirements

I don't think you have the latest revision of A484 (which I show as being May 1, 2013). It might help if you got a copy of the latest revision.

In that revision, Appendix X1, Titled "Rationale Regarding Definition of Lot for Mechanical Properties and Corrosion Testing" may give you some more insight.

The Product Analysis is a chemical analysis performed on the finished product (as opposed to the ladle analysis, which is a chemical analysis taken from the ladle, while the steel is still molten and has yet to be cast into billets or ingots). 9.1 means that a product analysis can be used for all products produced from that mill heat.

The "other test required" refers to any other testing called out by the product specification (mechanical testing and corrosion testing, if required). 9.2 means that a lot for these other tests can only consist of bars of the same size, from the same heat, and produced under the same processing conditions (or all forgings, provided they weigh less than 1000 lbs. each).

Keep in mind that A484 is a general material specification, not a product specification, and the specific requirements for Chemical Composition, and other tests (mechanical testing and corrosion testing, if required) will be detailed in the product specification.

Hi Rp,

Now it is clear, you are absolutely right my revision is outdated.

Thanks for answering.
