Question regarding API Spec 20E (Old thread809-333222)

(OP)
thread809-333222: What is the need for API 20 series

The aforementioned thread questioned the need for the recently published API Specification 20E, "Alloy and Carbon Steel Bolting for use in the Petroleum and Natural Gas Industries." The contributor questioned the need for the new specification, noting that ASTM standards for bolting already exist. API 20E was created to offer a method through which manufacturers of such bolting might be qualified, and provisions for adding specific quality-enhancing requirements for bolting intended for the most critical of Oil&Gas industry applications. Process qualifications (from steel melting and rolling, through product manufacturing and heat treatment), additive mechanical and non-destructive testing, metallurgical examination, and manufacturer's quality registration are requirements of this specification. In deep water drilling and production activities, bolt failures often cost hundreds of millions of dollars of recovery cost. There is also potential for huge environmental impact and loss of life. This Specification was written in direct response to a number of such failures, attributed to incompetent producers, poor design, insufficient process control and ignorance of basic bolting quality requirements. With the adoption of API Spec 20E, the deep water drilling arena will become a safer place.
