Copying points into Sketch

Copying points into Sketch

Copying points into Sketch

(OP)
I am supplied points by our customer and need to create holes into an airframe skin. I want to place the points into a sketch so that I can use the user defined pattern function and create all of the holes at once. I have copied the points into the sketch and when I exit the sketcher, the sketch is gone. I see the sketch in the tree while I am in sketcher but when I exit, it is no longer there.
Thanks for your help!

RE: Copying points into Sketch

first thing to check: make sure the points are not in construction mode within the sketch.

next thing: add a line or circle (delete it later) to verify you can see the sketch.

tip: after you get the sketch to display, change the graphic properties to make the Points look like a "+" or "*" instead of a "."

Jackk, I have tried all of your suggestions. I can see the sketch in the tree until I leave sketcher. After that, the sketch is no longer in the tree.
I appreciate your suggestions,

Bryan

RE: Copying points into Sketch

Will you see the sketch if you make just simple geometry like a circle?

You say you copy point into sketch where do you copy them from?

itsmyjob,
As far as creating a circle etc. yes the sketch stays in the tree. I am copying the points from a geometrical set in the same document. If I copy the points into a sketch that has other geometry in it, when leaving sketcher, the points are 'copied' into the geometrical set from which they came.

Hi,

I didn't have the opportunity to answer up to now but can you explain a little bit what you want in fact. I saw:

need to create holes into an airframe skin

Well, this is my question. Do you need to create holes on a planar skin or on a non-planar one ? Do you need to have them perpendicular on skin or not (rivets, bolts or ...) ?

Of course is not a CATIA related question but maybe you are going in a wrong direction. Still, CATIA is an engineering tool...

RE: Copying points into Sketch

ok think i got it

you copy 3D point and you think you paste them into a sketch but if you look in the tree, the detail of the sketch before you close it you will see you do not have geometry in your sketch, that's why the empty sketch is removed from tree when you close it.

You can paste only 2D point into a sketch.

create a view and project wireframe in that view, copy point from that drawing view into your Sketch ( sketch points not link with 3D point) or project point into sketch with function project from 3D elements (could be link to 3d point).

a drawing view is almost like a sketch. you can copy element of view into a sketch or copy a view in 3D, this will create a sketch.

Ferdo,
I need to create holes on a non-planar surface. The holes that are supplied are the pierce points, the holes need to be perpendicular to the surface as they are rivet holes.
Itsmyjob,
These are 3d points.

Bryan

RE: Copying points into Sketch

a sketch is 2D

RE: Copying points into Sketch

use knowdledge pattern to automatically create holes at each point. many example of knowledge pattern in online doc.

Itsmyjob,
That explains the issue. I copy '2d' points for patterns and thought I would just create a sketch with these points for the pattern.
Thanks for your help.
