Strength of stainless steel welds

Strength of stainless steel welds

I searched quickly and couldn't find the shear resistances for different size of welds in stainless steel.

Could someone direct me where I could find this information?

I'm in Canada, so something from North America would be best.

Thanks,

Greg

I've seen this, on pg 23, but this limits the plate thickness to 1/4"

RE: Strength of stainless steel welds

I don't think stainless versus non-stainless should affect weld strength. It should be a function of the fy of the material with the electrode properties matching or exceeding the steel strength.

Thank you, TDIengineer

But what are the electrodes to specify to match 304?

Also can I use the steel tables and just factor in fy for stainless as compared to mild steel?

I do know that stainless yield curve is different than steel.

I'm looking at the code for the Euro zone that someone suggested in another thread, but like to find something for NA.

RE: Strength of stainless steel welds

AWS D1.6 Structural Welding Code/Stainless Steel would be a good reference. It lists the various alloys and recommended filler metals for matching properties.

Thanks TD & Al,

Yes, I found out about D1.6, this is the reference I need, just having trouble finding a site where I am able to view it online.
