I need to find the strength of the gusset plate shown in the attached sketch, but I am having trouble locating the correct section of the steel construction manual for reference...do any of you know where I should be looking in the AISC manual or have another resource that may be better for this application?

Thanks!

RE: Gusset Plates - AISC 13th Ed.

J10.1 or J10.8 seem to be the applicable sections. Since the gusset is not needed for the lateral force, it may be possible to check only the vertical force.

Include P1 and P2 to calculate the moment and assume the center of the compression block to be halfway between the end of the angle and the edge of the gusset, to calculate the bolt tension. You have tension due to moment + direct tension along with shear.

Thanks for the notes guys. Yes, P1 and P2 definitely must both be accounted for in calculating the moment although I may be a bit more conservative and assume the center of my compression block at the edge of the gusset.
