Incompatible element C3D8I in explicit dynamic impact analysis

Incompatible element C3D8I in explicit dynamic impact analysis

(OP)
Hi there,

I'm doing some impact analysis on pipes using Abaqus/Explicit and i've tried using the incompatible brick element C3D8I as it performs better during bending. But, i'm getting strange results as the object hitting the pipe at first creates contact and deforms the pipe, but then suddenly the two contact surfaces penetrates each other creating over-closure. Anybody experienced the same or have any idea why this happens?

I'm using ductile damage and failure and I have made some analysis with the linear brick element C3D8R with ok results, but using this element demands a very fine mesh, i.e. long calculation times. Furthermore, the incompatible element should give better results.
