influence factor If for immediate settlement computation

influence factor If for immediate settlement computation

Anyone have the equation for the depth factor If from Bowles (immediate settlement computation). Id like to make a spreadsheet but with only a graph, it's a lot harder. From an old thread, I know the equation is from Fox (1948)and some people had it (a long time ago). Anyone still have this paper?

thanks in advance

RE: influence factor If for immediate settlement computation

dabrac, Got the old Fox paper somewhere, pls gimme an email .
Also, the recent embedment correction factor from Mayne And Poulos, 1999 is simpler and just fits perfectly into a spreadsheet.

RE: influence factor If for immediate settlement computation

Just don't get hung up on 4th decimal places . . . Can check out Poulos and Davis' Elastic Solutions for Soil and Rock Mechanics - it is now downloadable . . . (I think you can get it from Paul Mayne's Web Site). It is for 2 layer system - and results are tabulated.

RE: influence factor If for immediate settlement computation

I would like to get documentation about FOX's equations and if it's possible the spreadsheet. Where can I find documentation about Mayne And Poulos, 1999.

Thanks in advance

Jerome

This is the recent article:

Mayne, P.W. and Poulos, H.G. (1999). Approximate displacement influence factors for elastic shallow foundations. ASCE
Journal of Geotechnical & Geoenvironmental Engineering 125 (6), 453-460.

RE: influence factor If for immediate settlement computation

Mayne's great procedure to get influence factors ! try it in either spreadsheet or mathcad.
however, does anyone have any ideas on how to average out the different results from the center point and the corner points?

Thanks for the answer, i will certainly look into Mayne article.

I'm not sure about the need to average the values. Das in his book 'shallow foundations' gives a couple of averaging relationships but that way we loose precious information, that is the fact that we have X inches settlements at the center and Y inches settlements at the corners, usually with X>Y, is something we should be well aware of (differential settlements). As far as I recall, starting with the t rigidity factor and the foundation's elastic modulus Mayne's method yields both center and corner settlements, if they are about the same, then the foundation is rigid, otherwise it is not and settlements are different and averaging would just obscure the difference in an more or less optimistic way.

I might have misunderstood your question though...

RE: influence factor If for immediate settlement computation

hi
I too would appreciate a copy of the fox equation (1948). My email address is ahmad.jomezadeh@gmail.com. Thanks for your time and consideration!

RE: influence factor If for immediate settlement computation

Mayne and Poulos is a really good paper on settlement both elastic short term settlement and/or long term consolidation settlement.

From my understanding there is no need to average out between corner and centre (I may be wrong !).

I started a spreadsheet according to the paper, if anyone wants to have a look they are welcome.

civeng80!
If possible, get a copy of it to my email.
Many thanks

I am sending spreadsheet to your email.

Please let me know how you go with it.
