Hi,

for ASME SECTION VIII DIVISION 2, Chapter 5.7 SUPPLEMENTAL REQUIREMENTS FOR BOLTS, it is requested to check "actual service stress in bolts".

In this code, bolts are designed from their root area in design by formula (it is a pre-requisite to FEA calc, see 5.7.1 (a)), which is less than the tensile stress area (i.e. check in ASME PCC-1-2010 Table H-1).

It is interesting to see that in ASME PCC-1-2010, examples of target prestress due to torque is calculated with root area but bolt elongation is corrected to the quotient of root to tensile stress areas, supposedly to find an "actual service bolt elongation".


  1. Which bolt area do you use in FEA calculations for a 5.7 check? I use root area but tensile strength area would give results closer to the Code intent of "actual service stress in bolts", wouldn't it?
  2. Also, does anyone know if the 5.7 chapter was redacted with beam type or 3D, volumic elements in mind?
